Do You Already Know All There is to Know About WordPress and Blogging? Can A Baby Boomer Explore and Learn More?

29237

Just when you though you had arrived in your blogging then you find that there is something more you need to know about WordPress and you get pulled back in. Well the fact of the matter is that we really never ever know all there is to know about blogging. At least that is my opinion.

That’s why I am going to sit in on some of this upcoming Web Camp by Armand Moran.

Now this training is not for the faint of heart. You must be willing to sit, get up, and sit again because it is for many hours over 3 days. That is why, although the training is free, if you want copies of the recordings that is where the price kicks in. Also, if you really like the training you can continue the learning by joining the monthly membership site.

But if your calender can be freed up for a couple of days and you have some great coffee, green tea or camomile you can hangout and refresh some points and learn other points. Also, if you are snowed in that will be the ultimate opportunity. So, think about coming to class again and Learn Boomer Learn.

When in Feedburner visit the Tab that says Publicize.

Click on the ACTIVATE button at the bottom of the page.

Choose the option for TYPEPAD  and COPY the HTML CODE

PASTE the code into a TEXT WIDGET and place into the SIDEBAR OF YOUR BLOG

As soon as you do this please let me know the url so I can go and  put in my email to add to the many that will subscribe to your site.

Are You Using ‘ADMIN’ as Your User Name? If Yes “Danger, Danger Will Robinson”

Changing Your User Name Can Help Protect Your Blog

If you are still using ‘admin’ as your user name in your blog login then imagine that robot from the TV series Lost in Space warning you of danger. Now your name may not be Will Robinson (The young boy in the series) but imagine that you hear that robot calling your name. I did the other day when I signed into my blog.

I knew that there was a danger in not changing that user name but I got lazy. I have sat through webinars, telesminars and ever read that using ADMIN as your user name could make you a target for hackers! It is so true and I have been hacked more than once.  So I resolved to change my user name and I survived the task.

The Easy Way I Changed My ADMIN to Another User Name

I REPLACED MYSELF. I was listed as the ADMINISTRATOR for my blog with an ADMIN user name. I signed in ,with what I hoped would be the last time, with that oh so obvious ADMIN. Then I tried to delete myself as a user. DUH, it would not delete me because I was signed in. Ha Ha. So I had ADD A NEW USER then sign out and sign back in as the new user. Then, and only then, could I delete that unwise user with ADMIN as the handle.

Ok, here are the steps:

1. Sign in with your existing user name and password

2.  Create a new user with the same role ADMINISTRATOR.

NOTE: I had to use a different email address because each user has to have different email address

3. Log out of your blog

4. Log in again but this time as the new user.

5. Delete the old “admin” user and assign all posts created by that user to your new user. The system will ask you what you want to do with the posts and links owned by the “admin” user. When asked what to do with the posts and links owned by the “admin” user, select the “Attribute all posts and links to” option, choose the new user from the drop down list, and click “Confirm Deletion”.

Once the user is removed, you have the option to change the new user’s email address if a different one was used to create it. Oh, and be sure that when you choose that new user name that you do not use your name. That is just toooo easy for the energetic hacker.

Let me know when you change that user name!

Did You Ever Want To Send a Message to Someone on Pinterest?

I really never thought about sending someone a message on Pinterest. I always figured that if I made a comment on their boards they would see anything I had  to say. Yet, as I think about it there may be times that you want your message to be private.
I mean you don’t want the whole Pinterest world to see your suggestion to  another Pinner that they should use a better picture or that you thought their description needed improvement. Nor do you want everyone to see your attempt to negotiate a better price for those earrings they are selling on Etsy or Ebay.

Well, I saw this post on a great blog called Networkingtips4u on Creating Messages on Pinterest.

Remember your blogging 101 and leave a comment on the site.

Do You Know How to Move Your WordPress Site to Another Host?

Ok, maybe everything is just fine with your current host.  That’s Great! However, stuff happens. Little things like the server goes down right before you are about to press PUBLISH. Oops, when the server comes back up only part of the post was saved.Well, that was ok but when it happens two more times in the upcoming weeks you wonder if you should investigate other options.

Or,

Everything is just dandy with your server but when you think about all 24 of your sites on one server, oh my. What happens if it goes down? It just might cut into your online action. My mom always said that” A poor mouse only has one hole to run in.”

Or,

You want to send more traffic to your other sites.  So, yes you can write posts and link to another one of your sites to get some trackback action. But it sure looks good to Google and other roaming robots traveling from top search engines, if that traffic is coming from another IP address.

I currently use Bluehost and Hostgator. The support is simply amazing.  But I wanted to share this critical and invaluable information from fellow Baby Boomer Heidi Caswell-just in case you ever need it.  So please read the post below and keep it handy.

When Baby Boomers Blog is it Just a Lot of BLAH, BLAH BLAH?

When Baby Boomers blog is it just a lot of BLAH, BLAH, BLAH? I say YES!!!

Look at my mnemonic for BLAH and let me know what you think.

B-Business

Many baby boomers I know blog about some aspect of their business. They share their success, failures and visions. Some may think that baby boomers are too old to think about new business goals or even starting a new business. But when I think about people like Dave Thomas, The Colonial of Kentucky Fried Chicken many online entrepreneurs I am convinced that age really is just a number.

L-Loves

Baby boomers often blog about their many “loves”. Their love of gardening, love of people, love of grandchildren, love, love, love.  I Love reading blogs that target a passion that oozes with creativity and charm. These blogs are often uninhibited and can touch every emotion we have. They also just make you feel good.

A-Action

Many baby boomers were involved in social action activities that reflected their convictions and beliefs. Today there are baby boomers  who blog with the purpose of moving us to social involvement beyond a passive philosophical discussion. These are powerful blogs that are infused with the momentum that social media platforms can provide.

H-Help

Do you want more resources on caregiving? Boomer blogs can help. Do you want to know how to navigate a job search after 50? Boomer Blogs can help. Do you want to know how to blog? Boomer blogs can help.

I find that baby boomer blogging is providing an almost infinite source of resources. Why? Because we just love to HELP.

So where does your blogging fit in the BLAH, BLAH, BLAH?

Are You on WordPress.com and Want to Add a Registration/RSVP Contact Form?

I just posted about a creative way a Non-Profit organization used their WordPress.com blog to get registrations for a webinar. It is so cool. Of course if you are on WordPress.org you can use a plug in like Event Registar or RSVP Maker. I know there are others and feel free to share them.

Meanwhile check out the post on adding a RSVP contact form to your WordPress.com blog platform.
