I’m Back! I Hope

I’m back to blogging. Yes, caretaker duties have slowed me down. Plus, I am doing Ebay and Etsy to increase my retirement fund. But blogging just should not be stopped. Don’t you agree?

I am convinced that we baby boomers should keep a pad and pencil, Ipod or IPad around to jot down blogging post ideas. When we do get our hot hands on a computer keyboard we should try to create a post from some of our ideas. But, that all sounds good when your eyes and body are not tired.

Tonight I decided to upgrade my version of WordPress and some of the plug-ins. Time to get back to blogging. I will not give up! I am a baby boomer and we know about resilience.

Yet, we all need encouragement from each other. So, if you noticed that I have not blogged in a few nano months please encourage me. I will also try to encourage you.

Have a great weekend.

Bored With Blogging or Just Bogged Down?

Have you gotten bored with blogging lately? Or are you just to busy to blog?

I asked myself this question as I traveled home from visiting my mom in the rehab center.  I said ” Wow, I haven’t blogged in a very long time.” “Why?”

Well it certainly wasn’t because I was bored. No, it is because I am super bogged down with trying to do the Ebay and Etsy online commerce, work a full time job, figure out ways to add to my pension and take care of mom. I have all the drama I need to blog about.

Just my two recent trips to the Emergency room in a large urban poor community in New Jersey gave me more than 20 blog posts.By the time I talk about the evil of shutting down hospitals, overflowing ER rooms that strip the dignity of the cattle herd, amazing staff that works in what appears to be a war zone I have a lot to blog about. I should have recorded notes and blogged on a relevant blog before going to bed late each night.

Or,  what about all the Ebay postings, people and lessons I am learning? Learning the software, learning the rules, finding things to sell, consignment challenges, learning how to sell things I never looked at twice before. All Attempts to add to my pension fun. That’s good for at least 20 posts on two  new blog I created.

I realize that blogging can be systematic. I mean after all I created a blog management system that I am not using these days. So, it is time to put it  into action if I am going to give food to my hungry blog children on a regular basis.

What about you?

Are you scheduling your blog posts?

Are you making notes of your daily thoughts, dramas and challenges?

Are you bursting with ideas to blog about?

Or

Are you bored with the blogging adventure?

Black Hat, White Hat Which Hat Got JC Penny in Trouble With Google?

I really enjoyed reading this article about Search Engine Optimization strategies that got JC Penny at the top of the Google search for certain keywords. But what happened to make them plunge to a low placement. Was it White or Black Hat techniques?

Ok, some of you are wondering what the difference is between the two. Well, I will tell you that it has nothing at all to do with race. But everything to do with the stuff you can or or should not do that can get you in trouble with Google.

So, take a few minutes to read this really engaging blog post by the New York Times.

What is a Backlink?

If you do not know what a backlink is you have certainly heard another blogger or Search Engine Optimization (SEO) expert mention it. Here are two good definitions:

In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a web node (web page, directory, website, or top level domain) from another web node [1]. Backlinks are also known as incoming links, inbound links, inlinks, and inward links.  (Wikipedia)

The backlink is essentially the same thing as an inlink. It is a link on someone else’s site that leads to your own, and it’s extremely important to garner a large number of backlinks that are reputably obtained for several reasons. First, in SEO or search engine optimization, part of the algorithm for ranking your page on search engines is determined by the number and quality of backlinks to your site, providing they occur naturally and you have not purchased them. Second, backlinks are how you get known on the Internet. If lots of other sites provide a link to yours, a natural increase in traffic to your web pages occurs. (Wisegeek.com)

Here is a post I read on backlinks today. If you have other references you would like to add please post a comment.

Baby Boomers and Ebay Collectors and Sellers

This entry is part 10 of 10 in the series Baby Boomers and Social Bookmarking Can You Digg it?

Did you know that a Teddy Rooselvelt Marble sold on Ebay for $4,500?
I just saw a great blog established by Ebay for collectors and buyers of collections. It is called Ebay Collectors. The blog shares collector items that have sold as well as tips for purchasing an item to add to your collection.

I was more than impressed to see that Ebay designated a blog specific for this market group. I am also excited when I read about the prices that some of the collector items have fetched.

Now, note that the site does not have the comments currently open so I cannot suggest you go and post your insights or questions. Ebay has other great resources for answering your questions.  In addition you can email them your questions.  But the blog is a gold mine for baby boomer collectors who are on Ebay or want to purchase a collector item from Ebay.

Notice that the header is simple with just the logo and tabs for seven (7) pages. This makes navigation pretty easy for folks not used to blogs. Also, there is currently only one social bookmark for Digg and social network interfaces for Facebook and Twitter.
However, the very fact that those three options are available makes for powerful blogging. I am certain that it will expand as Ebay goes deeper and deeper into social media.

Note also that the Twitter feed is in the sidebar and tag cloud is extensive. If you think the comments should be open then shoot them an email. But as a blogger you also know how much work is involved in maintaining a blog. For now, you can always follow them on Twitter to ask questions.

This blog is still very new and it pays to keep an eye on how it progresses. I just love it when businesses expand and use the power of blogging. I also relish the appreciation for collector items that baby boomers know so much about.

If  you are not currently on Ebay but want to get started here is an excellent starter resource. Of course there are a lot of books out there on Ebay but this particular author has 35 books to her credit. It is easy to read and chuck full of information.
