17 Firefox Addons Suggested by Brandon A. Cox

Brandon A Cox has written a powerful post on Firefox add ons for folks who have not explored beyond Internet Explorer. I am convinced that you will consider taking the plunge once you read his insightful post.

You can read his insightful post on Firefox right here.

PS if you recall my earlier post on naked permalinks look at his permalinks. It clearly includes the date and title of the post. How cool! A great example to follow.

Widget Woes In WordPress 2.6.2

I thought I was just over tired, timed out or in the twilight zone. My widgets would not work! I found myself clicking on the edit and they ignored me. So, I switched themes and had the same problem. Finally, I went to the good old wordpress forumn and found out that I was not alone.

It appears that many are having challenges with the new version of WordPress 2.6.2 when it comes to widgets. So I decided to post a link from the forumn so you can keep up with the discussion. Also, I wanted to encourage you to visit there often it is worth it’s weight in gold to read the posts made by folks who know so much more.

As well if you are on blogger.com, typepad or any blogging platform-visit and participate in the forumns.

Here is the link I promised.

After I clicked on the theme to reactivate it my widgets worked! Go figure. So much to learn that’s why asking questions and having challenges help us to grow (not grey hairs) but experiance and expertise. (The grey hairs come naturally-HA!

Beta Test Sprout.com

Sprout is a brand new site for RSS feeds. It seems that they will be intuitive based on your needs. At any rate here is the white paper that tells you all about it.

Note that it is a pdf document.

Also, they have a blog so keep your eyes on the posts to learn more. If you are still wondering about RSS feeds click on the RSS category on this site. It includes an audio post with Cathy Perkins. If you would like me to interview you about RSS and add to this content let me know. Or you can post your own audio without an interview at your leisure. I can give you the phone number and you can talk away.

Windows Movie Maker-Still Learning

Just in case you are wondering why I posted the Windows Movie  video in the last post I will tell you.

I just discovered it. That’s right I read about it in a newspaper article and played with it on the same day, Now it is not perfect. I sent it to email and after 2 days it was delivered. I have no clue why. However, I am going to play some more and try to make this work. Any insights are welcomed. After all, as baby boomers, we must keep learning and know how to ask questions -also the right ones.

This was done on Windows XP so I will also play with Vista. Cannot find how to connect with hosting options. What If I have an option already?

One major question I have is how to find the code to pop into my blog. Anyone know?

Are Your Permalinks Naked?

Do you have naked permalinks? That means they are not clothed with a clear indication of what they are all about. When was the last time you looked at your permalinks? Ok,  let me STOP HERE and ask ,what are permalinks? Well I really like the definiltion by WordPress which says:

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to link to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change — hence permalink.

For example, if I want to share a special post  on my site in an email blast to friends, familiy and pets

I would not just send them to http://www.bloggingforboomers.com. That would be a waste of time because they would have to scan the categories and or archives to find it. Instead I would include the permalink that with one click would take you directly to the site. http://bloggingforboomers.com/splogs-spam-spings-scraper-sites-and-sanity/  But if I were to include it in a post reference I would probably say , Check out the post I made on splogs, spam, spings and scraper sites.

Now please notice that the link tells you what the post is all about. But when you look at a lot of permalinks they are naked. They don’t have the cloths of clarity on them. Many will have http://www.sitename/pg.15

Please do not try to click on that link.

So how do you change your permalinks? I am glad you asked. Follow the simple steps below:

1. Click on the SETTINGS TAB on your DASHBOARD

2. Click on the PERMALINKS subtab

3. Choose a setting but avoid the default setting. (The setting that is already checked.)

In other words, if you choose the default you will have a naked permalink. It will make no sense to your readers.

If you look at the picture below, we have chosen the custom setting and inserted the code %postname%.

Now, do I know php? Nope, but just know that If I use that piece of code it will put clothes on my permalink  that will say the name of the post.

Note also that you can set your permalink to show the date, etc with the other options.

So, keep your eyes on the permalinks on your blog and cover them up it they are exposed!

Do you have anything to add?
